Saskia & Ben were the very first A Practical Wedding couple to book me for their wedding, way back in December. They live in Brooklyn, but were married in Dauphin, Pennsylvania at the beautiful Peter Allen House. When I met them in person for the first time to shoot their engagement photos, I adored them immediately. They were sweet, thoughtful, and seriously hilarious. They even took me out to lunch after their shoot! (APWers = AWESOMENESS) So to say I was excited for this wedding would be an understatement.
Although the forecast called for rain, it ended up being an absolutely gorgeous late summer day. I arrived just as Saskia and her bridesmaids were having lunch, and there was so much electricity and excitement – but none of the sometimes manic craziness of a wedding day. Everything seemed to flow together so perfectly – we had plenty of time for the first look, for couples portraits and family portraits, there was no rush to the alter… it all just seemed to work.
Ok – there was a little drama. About halfway through the ceremony, I felt a sudden stabbing pain in my calf. I didn’t make a sound, but I moved off to the side, rolled up my pants and found a bee trying to get out of my pants leg, its stinger lodged firmly in my leg. I knocked the bee down, pulled out the stinger, ran back over to the ceremony site, and kept on shooting. After the ceremony, I asked Saskia & Ben’s lovely wedding planner Amy of Weddings on the Susquehanna if she had a benadryl. Ben’s dad overheard her and went out and found a doctor among the guests to check my leg! Completely unnecessary, but so nice. And that is the perfect example of how everyone was at this wedding – sweet and kind. They all made me feel so incredibly welcome! (I obviously recovered from the bee sting.)
Saskia & Ben’s reception was full of so many beautiful touches – photographs of Saskia & Ben’s relatives on their wedding days on each table, two beautiful songs sung to Saskia & Ben by Saskia’s father, and one of the liveliest and most fun horas I have ever photographed. The food was incredible and Saskia & Ben’s friends and family danced the night away. Toward the end of the night, a huge storm blew through, causing the power to flicker and the walls of the tent to sway, but not dampening the party one bit. The room was filled with so much love and laughter. It was pretty much perfect.
Saskia & Ben, you know how much I adore you guys. It was such an honor to be a part of your day, and I wish I could do it all over again. xo
