Life Lately || New York City Elopement Photographer

Lately everything has been go go go, and it’s only going to get crazier from here as summer approaches. This afternoon I’m going to D.C. for the weekend to spend some much needed girl time with my BFF – Hilary – and to take her and her awesome fiance’s engagement photos whilst I’m there. I’m also hoping to see my step-sister, Faye, and take her and her fiance’s engagement photos as well, if we can fit it in. (I think everyone in my life is either getting married or having babies right now, and I have dubbed myself the official documentarian of Life Events for my immediate friends and family. It is so awesome. Love everywhere! Hooray!) Then Monday is John’s birthday, which I am really excited about, but I can’t say why yet. ;-) And then next Monday we’re off to California! Of course, in between all of these things are many portrait sessions and elopements and wonderful clients and basically a lot of work. Which is how I like it. I think I love the go go go, even though I complain about it sometimes.

I think the best thing that’s happened in the last few weeks will probably sound silly, but… I got a new desk and turned a corner of our bedroom into a mini-office. This may not sound like much, but I have spent the last almost three years working from the sofa in our living room, basically. I had a short stint in renting a desk in Brooklyn last year – but the commute was too long – and other than that, I’ve just been hanging out in our living room. And when your living room is your office, you feel like you are ALWAYS at work. John and I would relax and watch a movie or something, and I would think – “oh, I could be getting some work done while we’re doing this, I should grab my laptop.” It’s not healthy at all.

After moving some furniture around in our bedroom, I decided we had enough room in one corner for a small desk. So I dragged my oh-so-patient friend Zan to Ikea with me last week, so I could get one. (And that whole adventure could be a blog post of it’s own, but I’ll spare you. Zan ended up carrying the desk back to my apartment, because apparently I am incredibly weak and pathetic. Oh, and she talked someone into hiring me while we were there. Man, I have good friends, y’all.) And now I have a workspace to call my own! Why I didn’t figure this out three years ago is beyond me, but there you go. This week I have felt more sane and productive than I have in MONTHS. It’s amazing what a small change like that can make to your life.

How is your spring thus far? Are you getting to enjoy it or is your life go go go as well? How is it April almost?!

And for those of you who don’t follow me on Instagram, my life in the last week in photos…

(1. Sunset looking west from our terrace.  2. A foggy morning.  3. On the Water Taxi to Ikea.  4. How Zan rides the Water Taxi.  5. Zan posing victoriously having conquered Ikea.  6. Bye, Ikea.)
(1. Sunset over NY Harbor.  2. My new desk!  3. The line for Hunger Games is bananas.  4. John and I are pumped for Hunger Games.  5. & 6. More sunsets, because apparently I need to document each one. I have problems.)

Happy weekending!

  • No photo of Zan hauling your desk? :)

  • Ha. No. I was too busy carrying the chair.

  • Your sunsets are AMAZING!!! WOW. Seriously. I’m obsessed (and have been since I was a kid). Also – I can’t believe you didn’t have a workspace until now! That is the one thing I’m SO happy I did. When I’m ‘done’ working – I can leave my office and shut the door. It’s far enough away from the living room/kitchen that I’m not tempted to just pop in quickly and do a few things. Nope. Lately I’ve been really good about being done with work when I’m done with work. It’s lovely! So glad you’re finally finding that too!

  • This is great! And not silly AT ALL!!!!!! When you work from home and don’t have a designated space for it, you feel like you are ALWAYS working or NEVER working. It’s so much healthier this way! Congrats!

    PS: your view is GORGEOUS!
