Friday morning I woke up with my hands clenched into fists and my fingernails digging into my palms. Apparently I’d been sleeping like that for a while, because my hands were in terrible pain. It was like reaching the pinnacle of stress, and I was a little bit horrified when I woke up and examined the deep grooves in my palms. I was clearly in desperate need of a weekend away from work and responsibility. (Although, to be fair, I actually think the stress is equal parts wedding season and our house renovation. The house renovation is giving me major anxiety.)

John and I drove up to the Catskills Friday afternoon to meet our friends Matt & Sarah who had rented a house up there for a week. And thus commenced the best and most relaxing weekend of my summer so far. I literally did nothing for two days and it was just glorious. The house was on fifty acres of land, overlooking gorgeous, green rolling hills. We sat on the wide porch talking and laughing, built a fire in the fire pit, made copious amounts of delicious food, played on the swing set like the overgrown children that we are, and Sarah and I even stayed up late to watch the meteor shower on Saturday night. It was so good for my soul, and I came home a different, much more relaxed person.

I need to do this more often. Not even necessarily get out of town, but just to go two days without cracking open my computer or replying to a single email. To spend time just sitting, doing nothing in particular with good friends and my amazing husband. To not spend what is supposed to be my time off watching TV or catching up on work.

Thanks for the best weekend ever, Sarah & Matt! We love you guys!!!

I have been an idiot and driving myself into the ground not taking a day off- thus I’m 234346% less productive. I took Saturday off, actually went to services, felt more spiritual and emotionally connected to the world than I have in months. Then I went to an art museum and then laid down in the town green for Jazz Fest and cuddled Nat. Heaven. So I back you up 100% on taking a weekend off. And can I say as a side note, HOLY CRAP. Those photos are fantabulous (how do you even spell that word?). For real.
