So here we are, and we’ve made it to the end of another year again. This year was the biggest and best in the history of my business, and the year that I looked around and (forgive my lack of modesty) thought… Oh, I might just be kind of good at this thing. I took a giant risk at the beginning of this year and decided to stop shooting large events and to only focus on intimate elopements. I didn’t know if it was realistic to think that I could support myself on elopements alone, but I wanted to try, and here I am. I did it. This gig as a NYC elopement photographer has had a bit of a learning curve – I definitely thought I needed to shoot way more than I actually needed to in reality, so next year I’ll be shooting about half as many elopements. But I somewhat expected that when I got to the end of 2013, I’d have to go back to shooting big weddings again in order to sustain myself, and knowing that I don’t have to go back to that is the greatest feeling in the world.
Highlights of 2013 (in no particular order): Shooting two portrait sessions in Sydney, Australia and shooting an elopement in Vieques, Puerto Rico. (Blog post of my Vieques wedding to come in the new year.) Getting the opportunity to travel all over the world: Australia, Hawaii, Dominican Republic, Vermont, Puerto Rico, Washington D.C., San Francisco and Napa, Rehoboth Beach, Montauk, London, Philadelphia… it seems like I was getting on a plane every two weeks this year. We finally moved into our new house after months of renovation. I found out I’m going to be an aunt to TWINS in about six months!!! (<—Okay, that was definitely the best thing about my year, hands down.) I turned 30, which I think means I’m officially an adult or something. Maybe. I got to be maid of honor in my best friend’s wedding. And we had a lot of family members get married this year, which means I got to be a guest at a lot of weddings for once.
So what does 2014 hold for Katie Jane Photography? I’m going to try my hand at boudoir photography during my slow season. I want to shoot a lot more destination elopements – and I’m still waiving travel fees for elopements in the continental US and Canada, and in the Caribbean case by case. (So… y’know… tell your friends.) This summer I’ll be celebrating five years officially in business as Katie Jane Photography. (I actually started shooting before that and was Katie Jane Parker Photography for a bit, but this summer will be five years as this iteration of the business.) I might just throw a little party. I’ll be working on an awesome personal project with a group of my photographer friends (much more on that to come). And as always, I’ll be pushing to be much more creative, shoot at more unique locations, and just continue to grow as a photographer. I’m really excited for next year. I think it’s going to be a good one.
I want to say a massive thank you to my clients. Without you guys, I am nothing. You believe in my vision and trust my instincts, and for that I am so very very grateful. My clients this year were beyond incredible. You laughed at my terrible jokes, I cried during your ceremonies, we made beautiful artwork together, and I ended up with so many new friends this year. I keep all the thank you notes I receive from my clients on a shelf in my office, and on days when I’m just exhausted from running a business by myself, I go and read through them all again and again. It’s a constant source of inspiration and encouragement whenever I need it. I seriously love you guys, and will never stop being amazed that I get to work with such awesome people everyday. I’m the luckiest.
I always like to end the year with a round up of my favorite photographs. Some of these photographs I like because they are technically good, some because of the moment, and some I like for reasons I can’t explain. I just do. There’s always room for improvement, but I’m really proud of the work I did this year, and I think I pushed myself a lot to try new things and to grow my vision for what elopement photography can be. So here are the best of the best from 2013. I can’t wait to meet all my 2014 couples and make more magic next year.
I’m taking a break from work and the blog so I can enjoy Christmas with my family. Blog posts will resume on Thursday, January 2nd, and I’ll be back in the office answering emails and inquiries on Monday, January 6th. Have an absolutely beautiful Christmas and a happy new year, and I’ll see you again in 2014! xoxo
