Tough Love

There is a lot swirling around in my brain this afternoon. I wasn’t going to blog today since I blogged on Saturday, but apparently I have something I want to get out. It’s been a strange day, I guess. Well… a strange couple of days. And It’s all left me thinking about destiny, and how in control of our own destiny we are. How I am so good at it and also kind of terrible at it at the same time. There is this part of my life that I have such a handle on – my marriage, my business, my friendships, my health. These things are not perfect by any means, everything has its ups and downs. But I have taken ownership of these things and my role in them. And they make me so happy, sustain me in so many ways.

But there are other things in my life that are not quite so together. Things that are sometimes tumultuous. And instead of trying to make them better, instead of doing what I want to do, figuring out a solution… I just ignore the problems. Because I’m scared… or I don’t want to rock the boat. And it makes me a miserable person to be around sometimes. I will OBSESS about it, but I won’t do anything to make things better. It is so completely stupid and obnoxious.

It’s so easy to be in control of some things, and then think you are just a passenger on an out of control bus when it comes to other things. I don’t know how to drive a bus, it’s too hard. I guess I just have to sit here and hope it doesn’t go off a cliff. But that’s silly, isn’t it? If you were on an out of control bus, wouldn’t you jump up and try to stop it, even though you don’t know how to drive one? You’d at least give it a go.

No one can make us feel miserable without our permission, right? We have SO MUCH more control than we think we do. If you want something – no matter what it is – you have to get it yourself. Nobody is going to do it for you. Whether you want to follow a dream, fix a problem, start a business, workout everyday, stop a bad habit, travel the world… whatever. YOU are the only one with the power to make it happen. Nobody is going to hold your hand and nobody can do it for you. GET OFF YOUR ASS, AND DO THE WORK. Stop saying you’ll do it later… your excuses are invalid. I think this is going to be my new motto in life.

I am so guilty of letting others make me feel miserable, of not doing something I want to do because I’m too scared. But then I remember all the things that I was scared to do and did anyway… and for the most part, those have been the best decisions I’ve ever made. And that’s what I have to do. I am jumping in the driver’s seat and getting this bus back on the road. I think you should figure out what the out of control bus is in your life and do the same. Stop making excuses. You’re only hurting yourself.

Lisa & Eric Sneak Peek! || Upper East Side || NYC Engagement Photographer

Today I had the pleasure of photographing the lovely Lisa & Eric’s engagement. Lisa & Eric booked me for their upcoming June wedding about a year ago, and I hadn’t seen them since, so I was excited to spend the afternoon with them. We started the day at the New York Public Library, and shot at Bryant Park, Grand Central Station, and on the Upper East Side. It was an absolutely spectacular day, and we were able to take advantage of some seriously gorgeous, golden light. Lisa & Eric – I had SO much fun with you two, and I am now even more excited for your wedding in June than I was before! Here’s a small sneak peek – much more to come!!

Amy & Mike Sneak Peek! || City Hall || New York City Elopement Photographer

I cannot even begin to tell you how much I adored Amy & Mike. This was one of the most laughter-filled weddings I’ve ever photographed. These two, and their lovely friends and family, were a blast to work with. City Hall was an absolute mad house, but we used our waiting time well, and captured some incredibly gorgeous portraits. I kind of wanted to come home and immediately share the whole wedding, because I just loved it so much, but for now here is just a little teaser. Amy & Mike, thanks for making me laugh all afternoon!

Kelly & Kingsley Married! || The Ladies Pavilion || Central Park Elopement

Kelly & Kingsley are an absolutely incredible couple, and I was fortunate enough to photograph their beautiful elopement in the Ladies Pavilion last fall. An elopement that came frighteningly close to not happening! Their wedding was actually supposed to happen the day before – a Thursday – but there was a snafu with the marriage license and they didn’t get it in time. Kelly called me frantically and asked if we could move the wedding to Friday. Amazingly, in the midst of one of my busiest times of year, I had the next day free. Their officiant – the always fantastic Judie Guild – did too. And so the whole party was moved to the next day, and once they got the marriage license sorted, everything else seemed to go off without a hitch!

Kelly & Kingsley traveled from the UK with their nearest and dearest, and holy cow – was this a well dressed group. The British have some serious style, and I loved the gorgeous hats their family wore. Watching Kelly & Kingsley blend their families together – including their children – was just beautiful. Kelly & Kingsley are very special people with huge hearts. I cannot gush enough over how much I loved photographing this wedding – every single person was such a delight. Especially their awesome kids!

Walking for MS

It’s that time of year again, where I raise money for Multiple Sclerosis research! I will be participating in the NYC MS Walk on Sunday, April 29th, for the third year in a row. Last year John and I were one of the top 200 fundraisers in New York City, and we’d love to make that happen again this year. MS is such a horrible disease and it needs to be eradicated. We’re getting closer everyday. There have been all kinds of amazing breakthroughs in research in the last few years, and I hope to one day see MS wiped off the planet.

Over the next two weeks, 10% of every dollar I make will be going toward our fundraising for MS, so my clients are already contributing in a way, and I thank you for that. If you’d like to donate to our cause directly, you can do so through my MS Walk page here: 2012 MS Walk. If you’d like to walk with us on the 29th, we’d love to have you! You can register here: Register for the 2012 NYC MS Walk. And if you can’t donate, just sharing this link or sending good thoughts is wonderful as well.

Every little penny helps. I’m so grateful for everyone who has supported this cause over the last few years, and I hope you’ll help us keep up the fight.
