An Ending and a Beginning

Posted on

This post has been weighing on me for a while. I don’t know how to start it or what exactly to say, so I guess I’ll just dive right in. Since 2008, over 300 couples have invited me along to capture one of the most important days of their lives, and it has been an honor and a joy. NOBODY has had better clients than me. We have laughed together, I have cried at your ceremonies, you have invited me into your homes, you have welcomed my husband and me when we happened to be visiting the cities where you live, you have sent me all manner of delicious treats and trinkets from your various corners of the globe, you have laughed at my stupid jokes, you have continued to allow me to photograph your beautiful families as they’ve grown. It’s been quite a ride.

And I would be remiss if I didn’t give a special shout out to my Australian clients who have made up well over 50% of my clientele in the last decade. I was actually bumping into clients walking down the street when we were in Sydney in 2013. I have always felt a special kinship to Australians, and am grateful for all of you who went back home, told your friends about me, and literally sent me clients from across the globe. I would not have had a thriving business if not for Australians. You all seem to get me.

But despite all of these good things, it is time for me to end this elopement adventure, at least for the time being. In the nine years since I started this business my life has changed dramatically. I have traveled the world, got married, bought an apartment, had twins, and have grown so much in my skills and abilities as a photographer and business owner. My priorities have shifted and my mission as a photographer as evolved. I have decided to focus solely on newborns and families at the moment. I may come back to elopements down the road, but for the time being, family photography is calling me and I know that’s where my heart is.

I still have a few elopements scheduled for this year – and I am so excited to photograph them, nothing is changing in regards to clients who are already booked! We are on, and I can’t wait to get you in front of my camera. But I will not be taking on any new elopement or wedding clients for the foreseeable future. I will still, however, photograph engagements, anniversaries, families, kids, newborns… any and all manner of families. Moving from weddings to portraits gives me the opportunity to have a set schedule each week and to spend much more time with my twins. For this season in my life, this is the best way for me to strike a balance between home and work.

I have been mulling this decision over for at least a year and waffling back and forth about whether this is the right call, but the more families I photograph, the more I know that this is the right thing for me at this particular juncture. I have some big plans for my family work, including the possibility of opening up an actual studio in 2018. I hope you’ll continue to follow my work. As always, returning clients receive a 10% discount for life, so I hope to see some of my former elopement couples in front of my camera again down the road.

You can continue to follow my work and adventures on Instagram and on my new website: Katie Jane Families.

Once again, to everyone who has trusted me to capture their wedding, the phrase “thank you” cannot accurately capture the gratitude I feel toward you. Thank you for your kindness, for making me laugh, and above all, for trusting in my creative vision. I hope you’ll all continue to keep in touch. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
